What is LocalMesh?

An emergency radio network by citizens, for citizens in the Netherlands, that keeps working when your phone and internet fail.

A network that works without internet

LocalMesh is a Dutch citizen initiative that helps people in the Netherlands prepare for emergency situations. When regular internet or mobile networks fail, LocalMesh ensures you can still send messages.

The system uses MeshCore โ€“ a smart network that operates via LoRa radio devices.

You don't need internet, no SIM card, and no subscription. Just a small device and your phone.

How do you join the network?

LocalMesh or MeshCore โ€“ what's the difference?

LocalMesh

The Initiative: LocalMesh is the Dutch citizen movement building an emergency network in the Netherlands. We inform people, help with installation, and ensure everyone can participate.

MeshCore

The Technology: MeshCore is the open-source protocol that devices use to communicate with each other. It ensures messages are smartly forwarded via repeaters.

In short: LocalMesh = the Dutch citizen initiative, MeshCore = the technology that makes it possible.

When do you use LocalMesh?

LocalMesh is there for moments when your regular network fails

โšก

During Power Outages or Disasters

When mobile networks fail due to major outages or emergencies

๐ŸŽช

During Events

At crowded festivals or hikes where mobile networks are overloaded

๐Ÿ”๏ธ

In Remote Areas

In locations without good mobile coverage, like nature areas

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ

Neighborhood Communication

For contact with neighbors during crises or for community projects

How does message sending work?

You send text messages via the MeshCore network. This doesn't go through the internet, but directly from device to device via radio waves (LoRa).

If your message can't reach the recipient directly, repeaters forward the message. Volunteers place these repeaters to strengthen the network.

The network learns the best routes between devices, so messages are smartly forwarded without unnecessary network load.
