Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know about LocalMesh in the Netherlands

What is LocalMesh?
LocalMesh is a Dutch initiative that helps people use the MeshCore network. We are not the owner of the network, but promote the use of MeshCore in the Netherlands for emergency communication.
What is MeshCore?
MeshCore is a global LoRa mesh network that sends messages through a network of devices, without internet or cell towers. It uses smart routing (path discovery) for efficient communication.
What do I need to get started?
You need two things: 1) A LoRa radio device (costs from €50), 2) The free MeshCore app on your smartphone (Android or iOS). You connect the device to your phone via Bluetooth.
What does it cost?
The LoRa radio device costs from €50, depending on the model. The MeshCore app is completely free. There are no subscription or monthly costs.
How far does the signal reach?
The direct range of one device is approximately 1 kilometer in urban areas and 10+ kilometers in open fields. But the beauty of the mesh network is that messages are forwarded through multiple repeaters. This allows you to communicate across all of the Netherlands in principle, as long as there are enough repeaters to relay the signal. Each device works as a link in the chain.
Does it work without internet?
Yes! That's the big advantage. MeshCore works completely without internet, wifi, or cell towers. It's perfect for emergencies when this infrastructure fails.
Does it work on both iPhone and Android?
Yes, the MeshCore app is available for both Android and iOS (iPhone). You simply connect the LoRa radio device to your phone via Bluetooth.
Why MeshCore and not Meshtastic?
MeshCore uses "path discovery" - a smart system that finds and remembers the best route for each message. Meshtastic uses "flooding", where each device forwards every message. This makes MeshCore more efficient and reliable, especially in busy networks.
Is it difficult to set up?
No! You install the MeshCore app, connect your LoRa radio device via Bluetooth, and you're ready. It's as easy as pairing a Bluetooth speaker.
How secure is MeshCore?
MeshCore has built-in encryption. Your messages are encrypted and can only be read by the recipient. The network itself is decentralized, so there is no central party that can read everything.
What is a repeater?
A repeater is a device that receives and forwards messages to strengthen the network. You can place a repeater on your roof or balcony. It helps the network grow and extends the range for everyone.
Where does the MeshCore network already work?
The MeshCore network has good coverage in the Randstad region. The network grows every day as more people join and place repeaters. Check the network map on our website for current coverage.
Can I send messages if there's no one nearby?
You need other MeshCore users or repeaters within range (approximately 1 km in urban areas). The more people join, the larger the network and the farther your messages can travel.
How can I help the network grow?
The best way is to place a repeater in a high location (roof, balcony). You can also tell friends, family, and neighbors about MeshCore. The more people join, the stronger the network.
When would I need MeshCore?
During power outages, natural disasters, or other situations where internet and telephony fail. Also useful at large events where the phone network is overloaded. MeshCore always works, as long as your device has battery.
How long does the battery last?
That depends on your device and usage. Most LoRa radio devices last several days to a week on a battery. Some models can be connected to a power bank or solar panel.
Is there a community I can join?
Yes! The Dutch MeshCore community is active on Telegram (@meshcorenet). There is also an international Discord server (English). LocalMesh helps you connect with these communities.
Can I get help with installation?
Yes! The MeshCore community on Telegram is happy to help. You can also consult our knowledge base or ask a question via the contact form.
Which LoRa radio device should I buy?
Check our devices page for an overview of suitable devices for MeshCore. Popular models are the Heltec, LilyGO, and RAK WisBlock series. Make sure the device supports MeshCore.
Can I build my own device?
Yes! If you're technically inclined, you can build your own LoRa radio device with an ESP32 and LoRa module. The MeshCore community is happy to help you get started.
Is MeshCore a replacement for the internet?
No, absolutely not! MeshCore is intended as an emergency communication tool for situations where internet and telephony fail. You can only send text messages (similar to SMS), no video, photos, or browsing websites. It's purely for emergency communication, not for daily use.
